Burma Bazar was established
in the year 1969 for Tamil refuges who fled Burma during the 1960’s.The land
for Burma Bazar was set aside for the welfare of refugees from Burma. It was
set up by the Burma Tamizhar Marumalarchi Sangham an association which looks after the welfare
of traders in Burma Bazar.
The bazar extends along
Chennai Beach station and is easily accessible to the public who step out of Beach station. The popularity
of Burma Bazar grew since it was easily accessible to people who got off the
local train at Beach station and also the erstwhile bus terminus at Broadway.
Burma Bazar houses shops for
almost a 1 kilometre stretch and houses shops which deal in Electronic goods
mainly, cell phones, cell phone accessories, perfumes, garments, home
appliances and fancy goods.
One must be wary of the
quality of the goods offered in Burma Bazar since there is no warranty or
guarantee on the quality of goods
offered. Burma Bazar is the best place to get cheapest electronic goods without
a Bill of sale. Burma Bazar is the ‘go to place’ to get ‘anything under the
sun’.
Bargaining is the order of
the day. The traders at Burma Bazar can be quite arrogant, aggressive or rude
while buying goods. More than 1,000,00 people travel through this busy and
bustling corridor every week. Foreigners are advised to visit Burma Bazaar only
with a guide.
Burma Bazar has been an
enduring landmark in Chennai and can easily be called as The Gateway to North
Chennai since many people pass through Burma Bazar to reach northern parts of
Chennai like Royapuram, Tondiarpet, Kasimedu, Washermanpet and Thiruvotiyur .
